The War and Peace report I'm Amy Goodman
0:13
Israel it's intensifying its War across
0:16
the Gaza Strip as the official death
0:18
toll has now topped 35,000 including
0:20
more than
0:22
14,500 children according to the United
0:25
Nations more than 360,000 Palestinians
0:28
have now fled the southern city of RAF
0:30
despite fears there's nowhere safe to
0:33
escape the Israeli bombardment this
0:35
comes as the United Nations General
0:37
Assembly voted 143 to9 Friday in support
0:41
of Palestine becoming a full UN member
0:44
25 countries abstained from the vote the
0:47
United States and Israel both voted
0:49
against the
0:51
measure the vote Grants New rights and
0:53
privileges to Palestine but it can't
0:55
become a full UN member without support
0:57
from the UN Security Council last month
1:00
the US veto to Palestine statehood
1:02
resolution at the security Council for
1:04
more we're going to London to speak with
1:06
the Palestinian ambassador to the United
1:08
Kingdom Hassam zumot welcome to
1:11
democracy Now Ambassador thanks so much
1:13
for being with us let's start in Gaza
1:16
with Israel
1:17
intensifying uh the bombardment of Rafa
1:21
360,000 Palestinians now moving out of
1:24
Rafa where so many of them had already
1:27
fled to can you describe the situ ation
1:30
on the ground as we speak we hear that
1:33
the Kuwaiti hospital has been ordered to
1:35
evacuate with staff saying they don't
1:37
want to leave their
1:39
patients there are no words Amy to
1:42
describe the situation in Rafa in Gaza
1:45
what is it horrific
1:47
Armageddon I mean people have been
1:49
targeted uh uh for seven months the some
1:52
of them had to leave five times seven
1:55
times 10 times including uh family
1:57
members of mine and I know what they
1:59
have done
2:00
uh uh uh through and not only uh the
2:03
displacement uh not only the slaughter
2:07
house um that they have gone through but
2:09
there is nowhere to go there is nowhere
2:12
safe fathers mothers are thinking about
2:14
their children right now I mean it's
2:18
it's
2:19
undescribable and it's obvious Israel
2:22
has decided to go on they are not going
2:26
to end this war without a serious
2:29
pressure and many are telling us you
2:31
know Israel doesn't have a military plan
2:33
Israel doesn't have a political plan
2:35
well Israel does have a plan and Israel
2:37
is executing the plan with almost
2:39
Perfection and the plan is genocide and
2:42
the plan is the mass expulsion of the
2:44
Palestinian a repeat of the neba of 1948
2:47
which we are commemorating this very
2:49
month in in in May otherwise nothing of
2:53
what Israel is doing uh makes sense so
2:55
the situation is horrendous horrendous
2:59
in every
3:00
sense of the
3:01
world President Biden said he's
3:04
withholding a shipment of weapons bombs
3:07
that could be used in Gaza as uh the
3:11
Rafa ground invasion is threatened your
3:15
response to this Ambassador do you feel
3:17
that uh President Biden is Shifting his
3:22
position well it's a very important step
3:25
uh uh uh uh and it it did break a taboo
3:28
a US taboo uh uh and we must build on
3:32
this but it is 100,000 people killed and
3:35
maed late and we need to make sure that
3:39
this is not just a pause but this is an
3:42
arms embargo that the US does fulfill
3:46
its commitment under international law
3:48
by making sure that its weapon does not
3:50
end up in violation of international law
3:53
uh and it is absolutely bluntly clear
3:56
particularly after the ruling of the
3:59
international cour court of justice
4:00
that's the highest court of the land of
4:02
the globe uh clear ruling whereby they
4:06
uh officially put Israel on trial for
4:10
genocide ruling that it is plausible
4:12
that Israel is committing genocide and
4:15
therefore there is no conversation after
4:17
that every third party that does provide
4:20
Israel genocidal Israel with weapons
4:22
especially these 2,000 bombs that are
4:27
not supposed to be used in civilian
4:29
areas like Gaza especially those and
4:33
many other uh weapons uh uh we should
4:35
see an arms embargo now and we should
4:38
build on that step that small step uh
4:41
taken by uh the US president and I
4:43
assure you if Netanyahu was certain that
4:46
there will be a NS embargo he wouldn't
4:48
have gone through Rafa he wouldn't have
4:50
crossed that American red line but he
4:52
knows pressure in the US by some of his
4:55
allies will Mount and that this pose in
4:58
the shipment of these lethal weapons
5:01
might actually resume soon um we got
5:04
word on Friday that the state department
5:07
had concluded Israel likely used Us
5:09
weapons in violation of us and
5:12
international law but the report claims
5:14
the Biden Administration has not yet
5:16
found specific instances that could
5:18
force the US to withhold military aid
5:22
your response
5:24
Ambassador I think the US here is
5:26
missing their words dodging an IR
5:28
responsibility laying the inevitable and
5:31
not having uh the guts and the will the
5:34
political will to do what is right and
5:36
this has been the story with the US for
5:37
a long time for decades Amy and that's
5:39
why we are where we are today uh the US
5:42
knows very well the legal assessment is
5:45
bluntly clear Israel not only uh
5:49
violated international law Israel has
5:51
bombed international law has bombed the
5:53
UN un premises uh and what have you and
5:56
then when the when Israel came up with
5:58
these allegations against against Ona
6:00
the US was absolutely uh clear or at
6:04
least you know quick to suspend funding
6:07
from the organization that deals with
6:10
the humanitarian side of Gaza of the
6:13
West Bank of Palestinian refugees in
6:15
general the US policy VAV Palestine is
6:19
inconsistent contradictory it does not
6:21
make sense it doesn't add up the US has
6:24
been saying for all along that it it
6:26
wants a two-state solution and when we
6:28
go to the UN seeking un membership you
6:31
know they they they V to it in the
6:33
security Council and they vote against
6:35
it in the general assembly and why if
6:38
you really believe in a two-state
6:39
solution why do you do so unless you
6:42
really don't and all what you're doing
6:44
is just buying time giving cover for
6:47
Israel to finish off its job this is
6:50
very disingenuous in the part of the US
6:52
Administration extremely disingenuous
6:54
and very counterproductive because
6:56
what's the end game Israel will not be
6:58
able to kill all pales Ians they will
7:00
not be able to finish us off so what's
7:02
the end game uh with doing that the US
7:05
says humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza
7:07
they want to see help and then they
7:09
still defund hona and so forth so
7:12
doesn't make sense uh and I I believe
7:14
this is a moment when the last seven
7:16
months have unmasked beyond beyond doubt
7:21
many things including the hypocrisy
7:23
selectivity double standards of of
7:26
certain International actors and I
7:29
believe the US Administration is right
7:31
at the top of that list of not really
7:33
being consistent with its own
7:36
responsibilities uh uh as a founding
7:38
member uh uh of the international uh
7:41
legal uh system and we have been
7:43
following some letters by senior us
7:47
officials and Senators threatening the
7:50
IC threatening judges Global judges uh
7:53
uh literally using words in their
7:55
letters like you have been warned you
7:58
know that reminds
8:00
of The Sopranos a mafia likee
8:02
threatening of Courts of international
8:05
courts that we created after the horrors
8:07
of the second world war to make sure
8:08
that never again to make sure that
8:10
everybody who commits war crimes is held
8:13
accountable to International legality
8:15
you threat you are threatening judges
8:17
imposing sanctions on International
8:20
courts on the IC only to Shield a
8:25
government and the military that is
8:28
committing genocide and is on trial for
8:30
genocide so and we are also following
8:33
letters by also Senators pressuring uh
8:36
uh uh uh the US president not to go
8:38
ahead with the pose of the of the arms
8:41
shipment uh to Israel and therefore yes
8:44
this is a time when we are following
8:45
everybody we will not forget we will not
8:48
forget we will not forget those who
8:50
stood uh firm against the genocide stood
8:53
firm with International legality and
8:55
international law and those who are
8:57
literally ransacking our human anding
9:00
our International Ambassador husum Zam
9:03
you are joining us from London you're
9:04
the Palestinian ambassador to Britain
9:07
the foreign office there is
9:08
investigating a claim by Hamas that a
9:11
British Israeli hostage nadav papell has
9:15
died in Gaza died about a month ago UMAS
9:19
has said that nadav papa will succumb to
9:22
wounds from an Israeli air strike about
9:25
a month ago his mother was released
9:28
months ago at she was also a hostage can
9:30
you tell us what you know at this
9:33
point I really don't have information
9:36
about this Amy whatsoever uh but all all
9:40
loss of life is is is is uh
9:43
heartbreaking uh regrettable uh uh all
9:46
hostages from both sides must be uh uh
9:49
released and returned safely and I
9:51
repeat from both sides because Israel
9:53
has taken thousands of our people
9:55
hostages without trial without charge
9:57
and you have followed some of the the
9:59
astonishing heartbreaking reports of the
10:02
Israeli treatment Israeli pres guards
10:05
treatment of our hostages a CNN report
10:08
only last week uh about the torture and
10:12
uh some of them have actually died uh
10:14
under uh torture like Dr Adnan
10:18
borch of Gaza who who is world renowned
10:22
uh for uh being a a backbone of the
10:26
health sector in in in Gaza and uh once
10:30
he operated uh 41 uh uh operations in
10:34
one day and therefore uh uh you know it
10:37
is crucial to focus on the uh uh what
10:40
Israel has done to hospitals and to the
10:42
health sector of course also to the
10:44
education sector I mean destroying all
10:47
uh uh uh and targeting uh uh the number
10:50
of hospitals they did and you know this
10:52
is this is important so people in the US
10:55
Amy understand in in relative terms in
10:58
proportionate terms if you apply the
11:00
ratio of those killed and maed including
11:03
children if you apply the ratio in Gaza
11:05
of schools of hospitals to the US let me
11:08
give you some numbers about the people
11:10
who have been killed uh and maimed in
11:13
Gaza would make uh in the US the
11:15
equivalence aund the equivalence of the
11:17
same in the US would be 14 million
11:20
Americans killed and maed if it's about
11:22
only killed it will be 5 million if it's
11:24
about children there would have been 2.1
11:27
million American children killed in the
11:29
last seven months about uh universities
11:32
and and and and hospitals it would be
11:35
6,000 American universities destroyed
11:38
either in in full or in part would be
11:40
4,000 American uh hospitals uh targeted
11:44
destroyed bombed and it would be
11:46
105,000 schools in the US uh uh damaged
11:50
or completely destroyed so this is the
11:52
situation and therefore in Gaza you have
11:55
no way to treat anybody and the
11:57
situation has become uh exactly in line
12:00
with the original plan the blueprint of
12:02
Netanyahu and Israel lifeless a place
12:05
that you cannot live in and even if you
12:07
want to move within it you have no home
12:09
to go back to you have no school to send
12:11
your children and kids to you have no
12:13
hospitals to be treated in a lifeless
12:16
territory for the final push of people
12:19
out of their Homeland I want to ask you
12:22
about the United Nations general
12:23
assembly vote 143 to9 Friday in support
12:27
of Palestinian state be was Palestine
12:30
becoming a full UN member 25 countries
12:33
abstain us and Israel both voted against
12:35
the measure the vote Grants New rights
12:38
and privileges to Palestine but not full
12:40
un membership which requires the support
12:42
of the UN Security Council last month
12:44
the US veto to Palestine statehood
12:46
resolution at the security Council can
12:49
you
12:50
respond yes that tells you the contrast
12:54
on the one hand you have the
12:55
overwhelming majority of the world in
12:57
support of Palestinian rights the right
12:59
to self-determination our right to have
13:01
a state status in the UN a member state
13:04
in the
13:06
UN
13:07
43 uh countries and on the other
13:10
hand uh uh uh you have the US standing
13:14
almost alone against that together with
13:17
Israel and couple of other uh uh smaller
13:20
countries being isolated and the us is
13:22
going out of its way always to Shield
13:24
Israel and to prevent its own policy I
13:27
mean it's so telling it's so telling you
13:30
know that vote and that speech by the
13:33
Israeli representative that shredding of
13:36
the UN Chata what was he objecting what
13:39
was the Israeli representative objective
13:41
what was the US objecting was it
13:44
objecting to Hamas was it objecting to
13:47
uh uh violence was it objecting to no
13:50
Israel was and is and has been objecting
13:54
to the creation of a Palestinian State
13:56
that's the objection the rest is details
13:58
the rest is symptoms and that objection
14:02
that block of our right to
14:04
self-determination our right to
14:06
sovereignty and Independence our right
14:09
and our duty to liberate our land and
14:11
live in a state of our own is the heart
14:15
of the matter that's the root cause and
14:17
why would the US object to that and then
14:20
the whole thing becomes about certain
14:22
periods of our history 7th of October
14:25
second antifa first antifa that's the
14:28
key uh part and I believe that moment
14:30
has revealed much and I think you I can
14:33
confirm for you that we will build on
14:36
that historic moment uh we must thank
14:39
all the nations that have come in
14:40
support of the State of Palestine and
14:43
its status in the UN and and we will
14:45
come back we will come back to the
14:47
security Council we will come back to
14:49
the general assembly we will come back
14:51
every session if needed every time every
14:54
day until we uh are admitted as a un
14:57
because the the majority of of the world
15:00
have spoken because Palestine is has the
15:02
right meets the criteria of the UN chter
15:06
for membership and the US has no right
15:09
and has no business the United States
15:11
and the administration of the US has no
15:13
right and has no business of objecting
15:17
to Palestinian right to self
15:19
determination they must that zomlot we
15:22
want to thank you very much for being
15:24
with us Palestinian ambassador to the
15:25
United Kingdom um interestingly uh uh
15:30
the speech of um the US ambassador to
15:33
the United Nations um uh was cancelled
15:38
the uh to Linda Thomas Greenfield um uh
15:43
both to and also invitations withdrawn
15:46
by Xavier University and University of
15:48
Vermont because of student objections to
15:50
American Support uh for Israel um
15:54
President Biden's expected to address
15:56
morous the historic black college next
16:00
weekend and there's Rising protest
16:03
around that address democracy Now is
