0:00

this is democracy now I'm Amy Goodman as

0:02

we continue to look at US policy in the

0:03

Middle East with retired United States

0:05

Army Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson who

0:07

serves as chief of staff to Secretary of

0:09

State Colin Powell from 2002 to 2005

0:12

Wilkerson witnessed and participated in

0:14

the effort by President George W Bush

0:17

vice president Dick Cheney and others to

0:18

promote lies to justify the disastrous

0:21

illegal invasion of Iraq in 2003 Colonel

0:24

Wilkerson helped Secretary of State

0:26

Powell prepare his infamous February 5th

0:28

2003 speech before the United Nations

0:31

Security Council where Powell falsely

0:33

claimed Iraq was hiding weapons of mass

0:35

destruction Wilkerson and Powell would

0:38

later say the CIA lied to them I talked

0:41

to Colonel Wilkerson last week and asked

0:44

him about the parallels between the

0:45

escalation of in the u.s. and Iran today

0:48

and the 2003 run-up to war with Iraq

0:51

ever since 9/11 the beasts of the

0:55

national security state the Beast of

0:58

endless wars the Beast of the alligator

1:01

that came out of the swamp for example

1:03

and bit Donald Trump just a few days ago

1:06

is alive and well America exists today

1:10

to make war how else do we interpret 19

1:15

straight years of war and no end in

1:17

sight it's part of who we are it's part

1:21

of what the American Empire is we are

1:23

going to lie cheat and steal as Pompeo

1:26

is doing right now as Trump is doing

1:28

right now as Esper is doing right now as

1:31

Lindsey Graham is doing right now as Tom

1:34

cotton is doing right now and host of

1:36

other members of my political party the

1:38

Republicans are doing right now we're

1:40

going to cheat and steal to do whatever

1:42

it is we have to do to continue this war

1:45

complex that's the truth of it and

1:47

that's the agony of it what we saw

1:50

President Trump do was not in president

1:53

Trump's character really those boys and

1:56

girls who were getting on those planes

1:57

at Fort Bragg to augment forces in Iraq

2:00

if you look at their faces and even more

2:03

importantly if you looked at the faces

2:04

of the families a symbol along the line

2:07

that they were traversing to get onto

2:09

the airplanes you saw a lot of Donald

2:12

Trump's base

2:13

that base voted for Donald Trump because

2:15

he promised to end these endless wars he

2:17

promised to drain the swamp well as I

2:20

said an alligator from that swamp jumped

2:22

out and bit him and when he ordered the

2:24

killing of Kasim sulemani he was a

2:27

member of the national security state

2:30

and good standing and all that state

2:32

knows how to do is make war I want to

2:35

turn to President Trump we took action

2:36

last night to stop a war we did not take

2:43

action just start a war George W Bush

2:46

had the opportunity to assassinate

2:48

sulemani President Obama had the

2:51

opportunity to assassinate sulemani they

2:54

didn't Trump did and you had dealings

2:58

with sulamani you were just explaining

3:01

in part one of our discussion what he

3:03

did in Afghanistan and how vice

3:07

president Pence was lying when he talked

3:10

about him being involved in the 9/11

3:11

attacks here you have one of the most

3:15

egregious things of what we did and one

3:18

of the biggest reasons that neither of

3:19

the two previous presidents decided to

3:22

do what Donald Trump did we have just as

3:25

we did with torture from 2002 to 2007

3:29

2008 as we substantiated for the world

3:33

that torture was okay we have now okayed

3:36

the killing of recognized members of

3:40

other states government that's what

3:43

sulemani was no matter how heinous we

3:45

may paint him he was a member of an

3:48

established States government and we

3:51

assassinated him that is a very

3:53

dangerous precedent to have said you may

3:55

have heard the members of the Russian

3:57

Duma Vladimir Putin himself and others

3:59

in Russia talking about this dangerous

4:01

precedent had it been the Israelis who

4:04

did this Amy they would have done it and

4:06

sent flowers to Tehran it would have

4:08

been completely covert there were been

4:10

no boasting no public slumping of the

4:12

chest and so forth that's the narcissist

4:15

in the White House that caused that to

4:17

happen but even if you were doing it

4:19

that way you would have to think about

4:21

this consideration that eventually it

4:24

would become public that you had done it

4:26

and you by doing it had sanctioned the

4:28

killing of other state actors now what

4:32

we're looking at here for example let's

4:33

just put the shoe on the other foot

4:34

we're looking at someone coming in to

4:37

Washington and assassinating one of our

4:40

leaders whether it be a congressman or

4:42

remember the executive branch or someone

4:44

else we have just sanctioned that we

4:47

have become the law of the jungle rather

4:50

than as we have been since 1945 the

4:53

greatest supporter of international law

4:55

and the rule of law in general across

4:57

the face of the globe with torture and

5:00

with killing other state recognized

5:03

individuals of their government we have

5:05

become the tiger the lion the bear the

5:08

alligator in that jungle it's not a very

5:11

very good precedent to have set as the

5:13

Russians indicated the Chinese have said

5:16

similar things

5:16

it's a terrible precedent to have set

5:18

and now we have to steel ourselves for

5:20

what the reaction might be and as I said

5:22

earlier the strategic initiative is now

5:25

in Tehran's hands they can decide now

5:28

whether or not it's a major escalation

5:30

that they perpetrate or just something

5:33

that sort of fritters away over time and

5:35

doesn't cause the u.s. to execute a

5:38

bombing package against the targets for

5:40

example that Donald Trump has suggested

5:42

I don't want to be in that world but

5:44

that's where we are

5:45

al-sistani said it best in Iraq I'm also

5:48

standing by the way was a big help to us

5:51

in 2003 in 2004 when the insurgency was

5:54

developing that Donald himself of course

5:55

said wasn't there

5:57

al Sistani helped and his statement the

5:59

other day that he did not want Iraq to

6:02

be the battleground of settling scores

6:04

was a perfect description of what is

6:07

happening Donald Trump is trying to

6:09

settle a score and it's everything from

6:11

he doesn't want to do what Obama did to

6:14

he thinks his maximum tension campaign

6:16

is working when it's not that's all it's

6:18

about

6:19

and incidentally we have another failure

6:21

in diplomacy perpetrated by Donald Trump

6:24

developing right now in the Korean

6:26

Peninsula so wait until you see what the

6:29

strategic results are of Kim Jong Un's

6:31

posturing on the peninsula and Iran's at

6:35

the same time we used to have a saying

6:36

in the Pentagon when we were doing

6:38

war planning we hope that the North

6:40

Koreans and the Iraqis at that time now

6:43

the Iranians don't decide to collude and

6:45

attack at the same time well Donald

6:47

Trump has set that kind of strategic

6:49

situation up now with two major

6:51

diplomatic failures mostly because of

6:54

the narcissism and the lack of

6:56

confidence that he himself is exhibited

6:58

but also because of the national

7:00

security state and its desire to keep

7:02

these wars going can you elaborate on

7:06

what sulemani did back when you were in

7:09

the bush administration you were working

7:12

with him

7:13

well what we had in the first days of

7:17

our reaction in Afghanistan was not

7:20

really a military action it was a CIA

7:22

action Donald Rumsfeld actually got

7:24

furious with the army because he

7:25

couldn't get into Afghanistan fast

7:27

enough if you look at a map you will see

7:29

why I couldn't get into Afghanistan fast

7:31

enough of course we had to go over to

7:33

Pakistan it was Becca Stein and asked

7:35

them for old flight rights and for

7:37

logistics rights and so forth in order

7:39

to even get in Afghanistan but what you

7:41

had was you had essentially a war

7:43

between the Taliban mullah omar and his

7:46

group what was left of al Qaeda and the

7:49

Northern Alliance which the CIA had been

7:51

supporting all along they had killed

7:53

Massoud the Lion of Panjshir the guy who

7:55

was really leading the Northern Alliance

7:56

to al-qaeda had killed him about the

7:58

same time they did the 9/11 attacks so

8:01

it was really chaotic when we did get

8:03

some special operators in and we got a

8:05

lot of aircraft in with of course

8:07

precision guided munitions then we began

8:09

to turn the tide and we began to get to

8:11

a situation where I can tell you we were

8:14

all almost apoplectic at the time we

8:17

didn't know who was going to invest

8:18

Kabul we didn't know that we hadn't just

8:20

turned Kabul over to the Northern

8:22

Alliance and bus to a continuation of

8:25

the last 30 years of warfare so we were

8:28

very anxious to make sure everything

8:31

worked the way we wanted it to after

8:33

that so-called victory and one of the

8:36

people one of the groups that helped us

8:38

the most as you might imagine we're the

8:41

Iranians because the Iranians looked at

8:43

the Taliban as their enemy - you may

8:46

recall that the Taliban had killed some

8:48

Iranian diplomats and others in the

8:50

months prior so the Iranians were

8:52

all four are eliminating the Taliban as

8:55

the legitimate government of Afghanistan

8:57

and so pitched in to help as I said once

9:00

President Bush had given his speech

9:02

about the axis of evil and included Iran

9:04

in that but their desire to help was not

9:07

quite as ardent as it was before but

9:10

they nonetheless realizing as Iran

9:12

almost always does I hate these people

9:15

who say they're irrational they're far

9:17

more rational than we are let me say

9:19

that again the leadership in Tehran is

9:22

far more rational than the leadership in

9:25

Washington so they decided they would

9:27

continue to help us because after all

9:29

the any of my enemy you know all that

9:31

old good business about the enemy of my

9:34

enemy is my friend

9:35

and and they did in fact continue to

9:38

help us all the way through the Bonn

9:39

conference and sulemani was part of that

9:41

at the time you just said Esper pence

9:46

Pompeyo Trump explain what they're lying

9:49

about right now as we hear them talk

9:52

about he was just about to engage in

9:55

another attack on US personnel well the

10:00

first thing they're lying about is a

10:01

military professional and I know I know

10:03

cold no general especially not one at

10:06

the level that sulemani was operating no

10:08

general reaches out and kill someone nor

10:12

does he reach out to a team and say kill

10:14

someone nor does he reach out to a squad

10:16

or a platoon or a company and say kill

10:18

someone he gives orders at the top set

10:21

strategic purposes and principles and

10:23

general guidelines and boosts morale and

10:27

he travels around and he talks to the

10:29

teams and so exactly what sulemani was

10:31

so good at so to say that sulemani

10:34

himself personally was an imminent

10:37

threat is as I said before laughable and

10:40

the fact that Esper and Pompeyo who have

10:44

some manner of expertise in military

10:47

affairs are saying these things makes

10:49

them even more egregious Liars than

10:52

otherwise if John Kerry got up there and

10:54

said something like that or if Warren

10:57

Christopher got up there and said

10:58

something about Kerry even with his

11:00

Vietnam experience you could you could

11:03

give them a little bit of leeway but

11:05

these guys are super

11:06

to be experts in the very fields that

11:08

they're talking about they're anything

11:10

but experts they are war mongers they

11:12

are war mongers par excellence Mike

11:15

Pompeo and vice-president pence they

11:18

both long for the rapture for the end

11:21

times for Jesus coming down to the earth

11:23

and killing all the unbelievers with his

11:26

flaming sword this is what they are all

11:29

about this is why they allowed the

11:31

embassy to move to Jerusalem go back and

11:33

check the remarks that were made at that

11:35

time the prayers that were given and so

11:37

forth this is in a word a very different

11:42

US administration but in the same hands

11:45

of the military-industrial complex of

11:47

the national security state of all the

11:50

people who want warfare to be the raison

11:52

d'etre of this Empire at the same time

11:55

so you're you're looking at an

11:58

incompetent leadership coupled with a

12:01

leadership that's ruthless and brutal

12:03

and knows where it wants to go and with

12:05

Iran its regime change period and if

12:08

they have to go to war that's what they

12:09

want and now they've got it to the point

12:12

where it's going to be extremely

12:13

difficult I'd put the chances at 50/50

12:16

for us to extricate ourselves from this

12:19

march to war and this war will put Iraq

12:23

to shame in terms of its consequences in

12:26

blood and treasure so I want to go to

12:28

the reasons for it and I know you have

12:30

to leave so we'll do this quickly 2020

12:32

presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren

12:34

was speaking on CNN's State of the Union

12:36

with Jake Tapper next week the President

12:40

of the United States could be facing an

12:42

impeachment trial in the Senate we know

12:45

he's deeply upset about that and I think

12:48

people are reasonably asking why this

12:51

moment why does he pick now to take this

12:55

highly inflammatory highly dangerous

12:59

action that moves us closer to war we've

13:03

been at war for 20 years in the middle

13:05

east we need to stop the war in the

13:07

Middle East not expansion are you

13:09

suggesting the president Trump pulled

13:11

the trigger and had Qasem Soleimani

13:13

killed as a distraction from his from

13:16

impeachment look I think people are

13:19

reasoning

13:20

asking about the timing and why it is

13:23

that the administration seems to have

13:25

all kinds of different answers

13:27

so that's presidential candidate senator

13:30

Elizabeth Warren last week right after

13:33

the assassination the oscar-winning

13:36

filmmaker Michael Moore tweeted the New

13:39

York Times front page from December 17

13:42

1998 the front page banner headline red

13:47

impeachment vote in house delayed as

13:50

Clinton launches Iraq airstrike citing

13:53

military need to move swiftly Colonel

13:57

Wilkerson can you respond for 15 years

14:01

Amy I've taught this to over 400

14:03

students on two campuses national

14:06

security decision-making is what it's

14:07

called one of the influences I emphasize

14:10

is domestic politics I would be a

14:13

traitor to the academic curriculum which

14:17

I teach I would be a traitor to the

14:19

truth if I didn't say of course that had

14:23

something to do with it and watch out

14:25

because there will be more because there

14:28

will be more impeachment any final words

14:32

Colonel Wilkerson as we move into this

14:34

very critical period with President

14:37

Trump saying if Iran responds to the

14:41

u.s. assassination of one of their

14:43

leaders

14:44

that the US will hit 52 sites including

14:48

cultural institutions which is by the

14:52

way considered a war crime 52 for the 52

14:57

hostages

14:58

Iran took more than 40 years ago if that

15:04

were the case and we actually executed

15:07

such a package we would solidify 80

15:09

million people in a way that for the

15:12

next 30 years would cost the lives of

15:15

countless Americans businesspeople

15:18

tourists and so forth throughout the

15:20

region and perhaps throughout the world

15:22

I know what the packages look like for

15:26

bombing Iran I worked to work on the

15:29

Soviets as they invaded Afghanistan and

15:32

we thought they were going to

15:33

drive south to Chava Horeb under a bus

15:35

to warm water ports in Iran so I did

15:38

some of the battle planning for fighting

15:39

the Soviets in Iran I know the territory

15:41

I know the strategic depth I know the

15:43

mountains and so forth I can tell you

15:45

right now that the bombing packages that

15:49

we have that will call on out your deed

15:51

and multi-carrier operations in the

15:53

northern sea of Oman and Khalif in Saudi

15:56

Arabia

15:57

Incirlik perhaps in Turkey and so forth

15:59

are not designed to do that so if they

16:03

are designed to do that in other words

16:06

modified and if they do that we will

16:08

have started a catastrophe in the Middle

16:11

East that will make as I said Iraq

16:13

looked like child's play retired United

16:16

States Army Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson

16:18

who serves as chief of staff to

16:20

Secretary of State Colin Powell during

16:22

the invasion of Iraq to see part one of

16:24

the interview go to democracynow.org

16:26

coming up next about a hundred fifty

16:28

people were arrested Friday at the

16:30

climate protests in Washington we'll

16:33

hear from Jane Fonda Naomi Klein Bill

16:34

McKibben Ariel Doran Shea Tara Houska

16:37

and Joaquin Phoenix he was arrested too

16:39

and he was just nominated for an Oscar

16:42

stay with us

16:50

you
